In our day and age, we have seen quite a resurgence in the popularity of motorcycles. Thirty years ago, motorcyclists were mainly seen as belonging to a counterculture, with its own language and sinister symbols.
Today, motorcycles have largely entered the mainstream, along with leather apparel and tattoos. Some bikers are known for their fearsome appearance. Looks can be misleading, however, and most bikers are law-abiding. In one respect, however, the death toll and mayhem in the biking world is raging out of control. We’re referring to the aversion that many bikers have to motorcycle helmets.
It’s no secret that most bikers refuse to wear a motorcycle helmet. This is a dramatic miscalculation that leads tothousands of shattered lives each year. Cyclists, motorists and family members are all negatively affected by accidents. As more citizens are educated about the dangers of motorcycle accidents, we believe that helmet wearing rates will rise. In the meantime, we hope that conscious riders will invest in the proper safety gear. Open faced motorcycle helmets are an attractive option for those who could do without the bulkiness of regular helmets.
Biking is a tradition that celebrates the freedom of the open road. Motorcyclists also project an attitude of freedom from the strictures and hidebound rules of society. Although freedom and independence should be greatly valued, we hope that the biker world will put a higher emphasis on helmets and safety gear.
